Every Hello Kitty Party Land multiplayer mode keeps the same cute look, and the party size is the main difference. Nintendo's store page says only online play and Save Data Cloud need the subscription. Local play does not.

Local play on one Switch

Everyone plays on the same console, and each player needs a compatible controller. Offline, Controller 1 is the host. The game supports TV, tabletop and handheld modes, so you can pass the console around a table.

In the Minigame Corner you can play any mini game with up to three other people, on Easy, Medium or Super Hard. Boards also take up to four players; read the Hello Kitty Party Land boards guide for how a board runs. Browse the Hello Kitty Party Land mini games to pick something for the group.

Online play with friends

Online rooms hold two to four players. The manual says rooms are for friends only, and the room host can set a four-digit password. You need Nintendo Switch Online. The manual does not describe matchmaking with strangers, so plan on inviting people you already know. If your friends own the other console version, check Hello Kitty Party Land Switch 1 vs Switch 2: the Switch and Switch 2 editions are separate, and we have not seen a source on cross-version rooms.

Playing solo

Hello Kitty Party Land multiplayer is optional, since the game has plenty to do alone.

You can play the mini games alone against CPU characters, and Hometown is open for exploring, farming and collecting stickers. Reviews point to solo exploration as a real part of the game. Whether a board can be played with CPU partners is unclear in the sources we checked. Mini game difficulty can be set to Easy, which helps if the CPU characters feel too fast. Newcomers can start with the Hello Kitty Party Land guide.

Co-op or competitive?

Mostly co-op. Cubed3, Famitsu and Nintendo World Report describe the mini games as cooperative with a shared group score, for example in Jiggly Jump, Stellar Fishing and Home Run Derby. One outlet says some are competitive or co-op, and the evidence on competitive modes conflicts, so treat it as a co-op game first. That makes it friendly for kids and parents together. For the rivalry question, see Hello Kitty Party Land vs Mario Party.

Each player also teams up with a Sanrio partner; see the Hello Kitty Party Land characters list. If you are buying for a group, the Hello Kitty Party Land Premium Edition page lists what each edition includes.
